celebrate navratri with kids

Nine nights of divine feminine power — introduce children to Durga's victory and the joy of Navratri celebrations.

What Is Navratri?

Navratri is a vibrant nine-night Hindu festival celebrating the divine feminine power (Shakti). The festival honors Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Each of the nine nights is dedicated to a different form of the goddess, and the festival culminates on the tenth day — Vijayadashami (Dussehra) — celebrating Durga's ultimate victory. It's a time of fasting, prayer, colorful Garba and Dandiya dancing, and community celebration.

Navratri Activities for Children

Make Navratri engaging for young children:

  • Story time — Read about Goddess Durga and her battle with Mahishasura from our illustrated books.
  • Coloring pages — Download free deity coloring sheets from our website to keep children creatively engaged.
  • Dress up — Children can wear traditional clothing in the color of each day's goddess.
  • Dance — Teach simple Garba steps — young children love the circular, rhythmic movements.
  • Chanting — Use the Shloka book to learn Durga-related mantras as a family.

The Nine Forms of Durga

During Navratri, each night honors a specific form of the goddess. Teaching children these forms creates excitement and structure over the nine days:

Day 1: Shailaputri (Daughter of the Mountain), Day 2: Brahmacharini (The Devoted Student), Day 3: Chandraghanta (The Beautiful Moon), Day 4: Kushmanda (Creator of the Universe), Day 5: Skandamata (Mother of Skanda), Day 6: Katyayani (The Warrior), Day 7: Kalaratri (The Dark Night), Day 8: Mahagauri (The Pure One), Day 9: Siddhidatri (Giver of Powers).
