celebrate janmashtami

Celebrate Lord Krishna's birthday with stories, songs, and activities that bring the magic of his childhood to life.

What Is Janmashtami?

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved Hindu deities. Usually falling in August or September, this joyous festival marks the midnight birth of baby Krishna in Mathura — born in a prison to parents Devaki and Vasudeva, then miraculously carried to safety in Gokul.

The festival includes fasting, midnight celebrations (since Krishna was born at midnight), singing devotional songs, decorating Krishna's cradle, and re-enacting scenes from his childhood. The Dahi Handi tradition — where teams form human pyramids to break a pot of butter hung high — celebrates young Krishna's love of stealing butter!

Janmashtami Activities for Children

  • Make butter — Simple butter-making activity connecting to Krishna the "Makhan Chor" (butter thief).

  • Dance — Play Krishna bhajans and let children dance freely, celebrating his joyful nature.

Baby Krishna's Enchanting Stories

Krishna's childhood stories are perfect for young children:

  • The Butter Thief — Baby Krishna and his friends would steal butter from the village, and his mother Yashoda could never stay angry at his innocent smile.
  • Krishna and Putana — Even as a baby, Krishna protected his village from the demoness Putana.
  • Lifting Govardhan — Young Krishna lifted an entire mountain on one finger to shelter his village from a storm sent by the rain god Indra.
  • Taming Kaliya — Krishna danced on the hood of the dangerous serpent Kaliya to protect the river.
